140+ Songs To Help You Cope With Depression

Music is powerful. There’s no denying it. It can make you smile and it can make you cry. It can bring up every kind of emotion, some of which we can’t even name. Everyone has experienced that before.

I have heard many of my depressed friends talking about how music has helped them cope with the illness. Then, I decided to make a list.

But I wanted it to be a long one. I wanted it to have all kinds of genres, so everyone could find something in it for them. So I went on Quora and asked people to name at least one song that has helped them cope with depression.

I received dozens of answers from people with all kinds of experience with depression. Most of them named more than one song so it took me a long time to go through all them. The result is this list. I’m sure that no matter what you’re going through, you will find at least one song in it to help you feel better.

Because there are so many songs, I decided to separate them into categories according to the general feeling I could detect in them. I’ve also written the musical genre in front of the titles so you can pick your favorite ones. The songs are listed in no particular order. Enjoy!

Songs to comfort you

In these songs, the singer seems to be talking directly to you. They’re telling you that you’re not alone. They understand you, they know what you’re going through. But everything is going to be ok. They are ideal to listen when you feel you need a shoulder to cry on.

One More Light (Linkin Park), which inspired our movement, is in this category.

It’s a number that’s always worth remembering. It’s a good idea to add it to your phone’s contacts list, even if you don’t think you’re ever going to need it. Something you know might.

140+ Songs That Helped People Cope With Depression

Songs to help you express your feelings

Depression comes with a lot of negative feelings. We try to keep them locked inside. We don’t want others to see this “ugly” part of our hearts. But the heart is like a bucket. You can only put so much water inside before it begins leaking. Sometimes, you’re going to feel the need to vent, to let the feelings out. Singing these songs can help you achieve that. At the same time, because someone else wrote these lyrics, you know there’s at least someone out there who understands you. It feels great.

TRIGGER WARNING: Because depression brings up some pretty heavy feelings, these songs are mostly loaded with sad and angry lyrics. Please listen with caution. If you feel they are making you feel worse, stop and search for help. Call a friend or a doctor if necessary. You can also reach out to our Facebook group. We’re there to support you. If you’re feeling suicidal, please refrain from listening to these songs (especially Fade To Black) and call your local hotline for support. We want you to feel better. You can do this.
